Artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the most talked-about topics in the technology world in recent years. Personally, I first encountered AI back in 2013, while serving as an independent board memberA board member who serves without a conflict of interest, contributing independent and objective oversight to decisions. Orhan Erkut has held this role in various companies. See in glossary → at a company and working on a demand-forecasting module with GETRON, a firm based at Yıldız Technical University Teknopark.
Today AI appears across a wide range of fields, from smartphones to healthcare, from education to finance, and it significantly shapes our daily lives. Let me start with what it is and where it is used.
The Foundations of AI: Human-Like Abilities in Machines
AI is one of the most exciting and rapidly advancing areas of technology. Aiming to have computer systems imitate human intelligence, this field seeks to enable machines to perform abilities that are distinctly human, such as learning, understanding, problem-solving, and decision-making. AI rests on two important sub-branches in particular: machine learning and deep learning. You can find more detailed content on these topics in my other blog posts. Let me explain them briefly here.
Machine Learning: Learning from Data
Machine learning is one of the cornerstones of artificial intelligence. This approach allows machines to learn from datasets and carry out tasks such as data analysis, pattern recognition, and prediction. Machine learning can be examined in two main categories: without a supervisor (unsupervised) or with a supervisor (supervised). In supervised learning, the machine is taught the relationships between inputs and outputs, whereas in unsupervised learning, the machine discovers the patterns and structures within datasets without any external intervention.
Deep Learning: Artificial Neural Networks
As a sub-branch of machine learning, deep learning is inspired by artificial neural networks that model the way the human brain processes information. Using multi-layered neural networks, this approach is capable of solving complex problems such as image and speech recognition, natural language processing, and game strategies. Thanks to its capacity to process and learn from large datasets, deep learning has become one of the most effective tools in artificial intelligence.
How AI Works: From Algorithms to Applications
AI systems use algorithms and models designed to perform specific tasks. These systems go through stages such as data collection, data processing, model building, and optimization. Through the combination of advanced algorithms and computing power, AI applications can develop thinking and decision-making abilities similar to those of humans.
Areas of Application and Potential
The fields in which artificial intelligence can be applied are remarkably broad. It is used in many areas, from medical diagnosis to customer service, from automation systems to financial analysis. The customized solutions AI provides increase efficiency while helping to reduce error rates and accelerate decision-making processes.
How AI Is Used in Everyday Life
E-Commerce and Recommendation Systems: AI's Power to Create Personalized Experiences
AI has the potential to revolutionize the e-commerce sector. Playing a significant role in increasing user satisfaction by personalizing the shopping experience, AI uses big-data analysis and machine-learning algorithms to deeply analyze user behavior, preferences, and shopping history. As a result of this analysis, it offers users tailored product recommendations.
Amazon: A Pioneer of AI
Amazon has played a pioneering role in AI-based recommendation systems for many years. By analyzing users' past purchases, search histories, and interactions with products, it suggests items they might prefer to buy on their next visit. This personalization enriches the user experience while also contributing to higher sales.
Netflix and Spotify: Personalized Entertainment
Platforms such as Netflix and Spotify also use AI to offer content suited to users' preferences. Netflix recommends new content tailored to your taste based on the films and series you watch, while Spotify creates personalized playlists according to the music genres you listen to. These systems help users discover new content while allowing the platforms to strengthen user loyalty.
Smart Assistants: Facilitators of Daily Life
Smart assistants are one of the most tangible examples of AI technology. Thanks to their speech-recognition and natural-language-processing abilities, they can interact with users and make their daily tasks easier.
Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa
Siri (Apple), Google Assistant (Google), and Alexa (Amazon) are leading examples of smart assistants controlled by voice commands. By understanding and processing the voice commands they receive from users, these assistants can carry out various tasks such as providing weather and traffic information, setting reminders, and even managing shopping lists. With their ability to control smart home devices, they also hold an important place in home automation.
Healthcare: AI's Transformative Role
AI is also leading significant changes in the healthcare sector. Used across a broad spectrum, from diagnosing diseases to managing treatment processes, AI provides considerable support to doctors, particularly thanks to its image-processing and analysis capabilities.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Image-processing technologies enable faster and more accurate analysis of images obtained from X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. This eases doctors' work, especially in complex processes such as cancer diagnosis. In addition, AI algorithms assist doctors in making diagnoses and determining the most appropriate treatment methods.
Patient Monitoring and Management
AI-based systems can monitor patients' health conditions in real time and alert healthcare professionals when they detect abnormal situations. This provides a major advantage, particularly in managing chronic illnesses and tracking patients.
The benefits and conveniences that AI offers across many areas of our daily lives, from e-commerce to healthcare, from smart assistants to personalized recommendation systems, show that the potential of this technology is only at its beginning. Every day, we see AI technologies advancing further and taking their place in more areas of our lives.
The Future of AI
AI is constantly developing and evolving almost every day. Advances in machine-learning and deep-learning technologies are enabling machines to perform increasingly complex tasks and to deliver performance ever closer to human intelligence. Very soon it will surpass a single human intelligence (we may have passed that day today, or yesterday), and shortly after that it will reach and surpass the combined intelligence level of all humanity.
The future of AI looks set to be shaped by the ethical, social, and economic effects of this technology, offering both great opportunities and great challenges for humankind.
Understanding the foundations of AI matters if we want to fully benefit from the potential of this exciting technology and to be prepared for the changes it will bring. Concepts such as machine learning and deep learning help us understand how artificial intelligence works and the kind of impact it can have on our daily lives.
Within this journey, I try to understand the developments and to accompany the change as much as I can. What about you?
