Not Retirement, but Life Design
There's no such thing as 'leaving working life behind'; there are only new roles where you pass on your experience. For the outgoing leader, this isn't 'retirement' but 'life design' — a path where two generations create synergy without holding each other back.

There's no such thing as truly leaving working life behind. There are only new roles where we pass on our experience, and new areas we'll enjoy.
We don't call this retirement; we call it 'life design.' The point isn't to leave things behind — it's to find that shared path where, together with the next generation, neither side holds the other back and the two create synergy.

'Leaving' isn't really the right word, because people face different challenges at different stages of their working life. In a company's founding period — though this may not hold in the same way for generations who took over an already-established business — the risk during that first phase of acceleration and momentum is greater.
As the work succeeds and the company grows, the points at which decisions get made shift as well. But the current generation, the one actively in charge, sometimes doesn't notice this shift. What I often see is this: the way a person does business evolves over time. What matters is being able to see that evolution and to understand today's wants and expectations.
Sometimes the next step isn't retreating to a lakeside to go fishing, the way you might have pictured it. Maybe it's a new role where you can pass on the experience you've built up. Or maybe it's working in a new field that your accumulated experience makes easier, that you enjoy, and that doesn't get in the way of the handover to the younger generation. Just as we need to guide young people toward doing the right thing at the right time, we also need to support the current generation as they prepare for their own future. I don't call this retirement; I call it life design. Because the point isn't to leave; it's to build a path where both generations can carry on their own journey, create synergy, and never hold each other back.
